Product Description

To say that Jimmy Smith was the Daddy of the Jazz Hammond B3 organ is no exaggeration in the least. His success especially at Blue Note and Verve established the B3 as a bona fide Jazz instrument. Smith took the B3 from the church pulpit and R&B juke joint to the Jazz mainstream and in the process influenced generations of organ players, everyone from Jimmy McGriff to Brian Auger. Sit On It dates from 1977 and features a stellar band including Herbie Hancock, Return To Forever s Lenny White on drums and session bassman Abraham Laboriel. The album is of its era and has a strong Jazz Funk influence, and is Smith s most Fusion orientated album. Smith speeds up Skip Scarborough s Can t Hide Love , a hit for, Earth Wind and Fire and numerous other artists, but this unique version has a completely different arrangement and is a dance floor filler that has been in demand for many years. The album also contains three strong Jazz Funk tunes culminating in Slippery Hips , whose fluid bassline characterises the track.. My Place In Space is a solid Jazz Funk groove with tough funky bassline and solid drum backbeat Unfinished Business was Jimmy s third album for Mercury and released in 1978. It is a more jazzy affair. The most in demand track is the Jazz dance tune 8 Counts For Rita that became popular in London Jazz clubs in the eighties. There is also a muscular and gritty version of the Earth Wind and Fire classic Serpentine Fire . Sit On it and Unfinished Business display two quite different sides to Jimmy Smith s musical personality. We are delighted to present these two albums on CD for the first time, re-mastered from the original masters, and sounding fresher than ever.We anticipate reviews in Jazzwise, Mojo, Record Collector, Echoes and other publications and airplay on Jazz Fm, Smooth Fm, BBC6, Solar and other stations.
